All Montpelier Villa Youth teams aim to play progressive, attractive football at all times with an emphasis on encouraging players to express themselves. We focus on the development of players above results as outlined in our youth blue print, from ages 7-12. The fantastic pitches at Falmer suit our style of football, which is all about building from the back, keeping possession and the ball firmly on the Falmer carpet.

Chris Day, who coaches our under 11s side as well as working for Albion in the Community, says the following about his coaching philosophy:

“My coaching philosophy is all about inclusion and fun technical practices. I’m very lucky to work full time in football and I can apply many aspects of my daily work and ideas into the Villa U11 team. Originally they were a school team, Stanford Strikers, and we deliberately involved any child who was interested in playing, rather than picking the ‘best’ players. Many teams select the biggest / more developed players accidentally [Relative Age Effect] and you may find many youth teams have a large amount of pre Christmas birthdays. Our team is the opposite and has the majority of birthdays between March and August.

I’m very much a believer in ‘let the game be the teacher’, children are more than capable of working things out through guided discovery. Coaching needs to be fun and age appropriate. Games need to be competitive, inclusive and fun. For nearly every child you need to develop their love for the game – you are developing good citizens, not professional players, which is a lesson many grassroots coaches seem to forget!”

Interested in joining the Villa Youth Revolution?

Montpelier Villa Youth is in a very exciting phase of development and growth. Having started with one under 9 side in 2012, we now, five years later, have seven youth teams and we are looking to grow year on year. Our two under 14 teams particularly, are looking for new players for the 2017/18 season.

We have the best facilities in Sussex, playing on the carpet at Falmer Sports Complex, home of Sussex University and most importantly, we have some fantastic coaches with great experience leading the Villa Youth revolution – Chris Day is a UEFA B coach who leads the Villa philosophy for the 7-12 year old age group whilst Ollie Rickman leads the u13 upwards. Ollie is another UEFA B level coach whose training is heavily influenced and centred around the FA Youth Modules – he has youth module 3 qualification and is in the process of getting the full youth award qualification with the focus on learning and development …

The Villa u14s have had a couple of fantastic seasons gaining promotion from both divisions 4 and 3 in successive years in the Sussex Sunday Youth League whilst the other u14 side consolidated in mid-table in the Mid Sussex Youth League division 3. Now both teams are adding to their squad for next season as the team starts its assault on divisions 2 and 3. The u14s will be holding a trial day in early June on the 3G at BACA, so if you know someone who would like to come along then please email or call Gary Pleece on 07989159984.

For more information on how you can get involved in the Villa Youth set up, also contact Gary and he will be happy to chat things through.
