MVFC 1 v Roffey 1 (SCFL Division 2)
Date: March 4, 2017
Venue: Falmer Sports Complex
The Home side went into the game with a number of regular 1st team players unavailable through a combination of suspensions, injuries and world travel. Typically then, of course, Aaron Blackwell had to come off after just 10 minutes with a hip problem and goalkeeper James McKemey had to manage his game with a recurrence of an ankle problem.
That said it was a fairly even 1st period broken only by a fine goal from Tod Brennan. On 35 minutes the midfielder, who himself was returning to the team after his own injury, turned on a sixpence and rifled home a low drive into the bottom corner.
The Visitors came out of the traps well after the re-start with their full backs clearly given license to get forward at will. This proved effective, pushing the Villa wide men back and therefore stemming their attacking threat. On the hour Roffey equalised after good work down their right that resulted in a shot that came back across the goal off the inside of the far post. The question was did it cross the line. With the referee unsure the Villa linesman said that it had and awarded the goal.
Thereafter the game remained fairly even again with both sides making tactical changes in search of a winner. Indeed had it not been for a couple of excellent saves late on by the Roffey keeper, Aaron Jeal, the Host’s may well have found it.
However a point a piece was probably about right in the final reckoning and just goes to show the strength in depth that there now is at the Club. Special mention too to debutante, Jim de Trafford, who was called into action early on when Aaron had to come off. With no game time for some months and despite only having met most of his team mates a couple of hours earlier acquitted himself excellently and will no doubt do well at the Club.
MOM: Dave MacNeill (captain fantastic)
